piedfingro

Foot-finger. That is the whole word, and it is a small joy every time. Piedo is a foot, fingro is a finger, and a toe is a finger that lives on your foot. English needs an entirely separate word for the same object and has to teach it separately. Esperanto charges you nothing: if you knew the two roots at ranks 284 and 663, you already knew this word at rank 2,605 without meeting it.

This is the argument for the language in one lemma. A learner of French has to absorb orteil cold. Here the meaning falls out of parts you own.

Which finger gets the plain word. Fingro on its own means a finger of the hand, and you can say manfingro when you need to be explicit about it - in a sentence that already mentions toes, for instance. Nobody says manfingro casually, because the unmarked reading of fingro is already the hand.

The named ones, since they follow the same logic:

• dikfingro - thumb, literally thick-finger
• montrofingro - index finger, the pointing-finger
• mezfingro - middle finger
• etfingro - little finger
• grandfingro or dika piedfingro - big toe

And the idiom. Stari sur la piedfingroj is to stand on tiptoe, exactly as in English, and sur la piedpintoj (foot-points) does the same job with a different picture. Both are understood everywhere.
