pipo

Pipo is the smoking pipe and nothing else. This is the whole point of the page, because English pipe covers three quite separate objects and Esperanto splits them.

• The thing you fill with tobacco: pipo.
• The thing water runs through: tubo, rank 2111 and already in this course. A drainpipe is a tubo. Plumbing is tubaro. Asking for a pipo at a builders' merchant gets you nothing useful.
• The thing you blow into: fajfilo for a whistle, fluto for a flute, orgentubo for an organ pipe.

The Reta Vortaro's entry carries only the tobacco sense, with fumi pipon da tabako as its example, and the derivations all point the same way: pipfumo pipe smoke, pipopleno a pipeful, akvopipo a water pipe in the hookah sense, pipi to smoke a pipe. There is no plumbing anywhere in the family.

Note the da in pipon da tabako: a pipeful of tobacco, measured, which is the quantity construction the grammar article on da sets out. Pipo de ligno is a pipe made of wood, and that is de, not da, because the wood is not being measured out.
