From the country name Portugal, which goes back to Latin Portus Cale, 'the port of Cale', the ancient settlement that grew into modern Porto. The Latin portus ('harbour') also gives English port.

As with every language name in Esperanto, the adjective does double duty: (with understood) means the Portuguese language, and Portugalio is the country. Roughly 250 million people speak it, most of them in Brazil rather than Portugal.
