Translation
mobile phone, mobile
Word origin
A compound of poŝo ('pocket', from French poche) and telefono, itself Greek tele ('far') plus phone ('sound'). Esperanto names the thing the way German does with Handy's rival Taschentelefon: the telephone you keep in a pocket.

Compound nouns in Esperanto are simply glued together, the last element carrying the ending: plus gives a pocket telephone. Split it and you can read it cold, which is the whole point of the system. Poŝhorloĝo and poŝlampo are built the same way. In speech people often drop to plain , exactly as English drops to "phone".
