Built straight from , near, plus --, to become: to become near is to approach. That is the whole grammar of it, and it shows Esperanto doing its best trick, deriving a verb you would otherwise have to memorise. It is intransitive, so the thing you approach takes , never a bare accusative. is the same word with - welded on and is if anything commoner in print - both are correct, so pick one and be consistent. The transitive counterpart means to bring something closer.
