The - prefix pins the direction of towards something, and the result is transitive - , with the accusative and no preposition. That surprises learners who expect a verb of motion to need , but the prefix has already done that job, so repeating it is clumsy. is the near-synonym and takes ; use it when the approach is gradual rather than a few decisive steps. The abstract sense, approaching a problem, works as it does in English.
