salono

A salono is the room you receive people in, not any old ĉambro. In the nineteenth-century literature that fills the Esperanto corpus it is where visitors are shown, conversation happens and nothing useful gets done, which is why the word turns up far more often than its modern usefulness would suggest. The second sense stretches to a public hall, so an exhibition or a congress can have one too.

English speakers should note that the English saloon went a different way entirely, into bars and cars. If you want a barber's or a beauty place, Esperanto builds it with -ej- from the trade instead.
