is not just wanting. is a wish; is aching for something absent, usually something you had once. The register is frankly literary, so it turns up in poetry and in letters home far more than in conversation.
Prepositions are loose here. is the commonest and safest, is well attested, and a bare accusative object also occurs in older texts. The noun sopiro is the longing itself, and hejmsopiro is homesickness.
