covers both halves of English wild: untamed and uncultivated on one side, ferocious or unrestrained on the other, and context decides which. i is to tame, built the long way round from wild rather than borrowing a separate root, and o is a wilderness. Applied to people it is the word older texts use for peoples the writer considered savage, so it comes with the nineteenth-century baggage you would expect and is worth handling carefully in modern prose. For merely furious, or will serve you better.
