surteriĝi

Three pieces, and every one of them is already yours. Sur is on, ter- is ground, and -iĝ- is the suffix that means to come into that state. Put them together and surteriĝi is to come to be on the ground, which is what a plane, a bird and a spacecraft all do at the end of a flight. Nothing here was borrowed; the word was assembled out of stock.

The -iĝ- is doing the work that matters, and it is worth being clear about it. Igi and iĝi are a pair: -ig- makes something happen to a thing, -iĝ- has the thing come to be that way. So the aeroplane surteriĝas under its own power, and the piloto - who lands a few words further along this same chapter - surterigas it. The noun is surteriĝo, the landing.

You will also meet alteriĝi, built the same way from al instead of sur, and in aviation writing it is the commoner of the two. They mean the same thing; the choice is between coming to the ground and coming to be on it, which is a distinction nobody has ever needed to make in the air. Pick one and be consistent. Its opposite is ekflugi, to take off, and neither of them is alveni - you arrive at a destination, but you land on a surface, and a plane that lands in the wrong country has done one and not the other.
