Examples

.

.

A bird flew over the house.

.

She saw a big black bird on the wall.

.

The birds flew away to warmer countries.

.

A little bird drank from the river.

is the general word, and specific species carry their own roots rather than being built out of it. The usual suffixes still apply: o for a small one, o for a chick, o for an aviary.

Watch super in the second example. With no accusative it means the bird was flying about up there; super would mean it crossed from one side to the other. That contrast between position and destination is one of the few genuinely fiddly corners of Esperanto grammar, and prepositions of place are where you meet it.
