svisa

An ethnonym adjective, which means the root names the people and everything else is built from it. Sviso is a Swiss person, svisa is the adjective, and the country follows. That is Category 1 in the system the countries and peoples article lays out: the root is the people, as with franco giving Francio and ruso giving Rusio. Note the capital letters, or rather the lack of them. The country takes one and the people and the adjective do not: Svislando but sviso, svisa, la svisa.

The country name is the interesting bit. The regular Category 1 build would give Svisio, and that form exists and is correct. But the commoner name by some distance is Svislando, using the ordinary noun lando instead of a suffix, which puts Switzerland in the small group the article names: Nederlando, Skotlando, Irlando, Finnlando, Islando and Pollando. Older texts will give you Svisujo, with the Fundamento's own -uj-. All three are correct, all three are met, and the house position on this site is to write -io or -lando and to read -ujo.

Switzerland is where the vocabulary of neutrality lives, which is why neŭtrala came up in the last chapter and this word comes up now. Svisa neŭtraleco is a set phrase, and the country's four national languages make it a standing example in any argument about international communication, which is an argument the Esperanto movement has been having since 1887. La Svisa Esperanto-Societo is one of the older national associations.

Watch one small trap. Svisa is the adjective from the people; there is no svislanda in ordinary use, because the adjective is built from svis- and not from the country name. That is the general Category 1 rule: franca not francia, svisa not svislanda.
