Translation
tobacco
Word origin
From Spanish tabaco, which the Spanish took from a Caribbean Arawakan language after 1492. What the original word named is disputed: the pipe the leaf was smoked through, or the roll of leaves itself. Either way it is one of the small handful of everyday European words that came from the Americas rather than the other way round.
