table of data, chart, grid

Word origin

From Latin tabella, a little board or writing tablet, the diminutive of tabula. Esperanto tablo comes from tabula itself, so the furniture and the chart are the same Latin word at two sizes.

Examples

.

The teacher drew a table on the blackboard.

.

In the table you will find all the numbers for the year.

.

In the table the words stand in five columns.

A is a table of data: rows, columns, a timetable, a chart on a wall. The furniture is (rank 305). One letter apart, and both from Latin tabula, which is not much comfort when you are trying to say you have booked a table for four.

Esperanto's own most famous table is the correlative grid, forty five words in five columns and nine rows, and that is exactly why the correlatives are called tabelvortoj, table-words. No other language names a word class after the shape of the page it is printed on. Correlatives has the grid itself, and Correlatives in prose has what they look like once they are out of it.
