Word origin
From French tapis, by way of Latin tapetium from Greek tapes, a woven cloth. The Greek word covered any heavy patterned textile, on a floor or a wall or a table.

One word for both carpet and rug: Esperanto does not divide them by size, so and do the job. A o is a mat, and the diminutive is the usual way to get there.
The word to keep it away from is tapeto, which is wallpaper. The two share the Greek tapes and both name something that covers a flat surface, so the confusion is understandable, but goes on the floor and tapeto goes on the wall, and the shapes are close enough that a slip is easy. English speakers get an unhelpful nudge here from "tapestry", which sounds like tapeto and means neither.
