Translation
vase; vessel, container
Word origin
From Latin vas, a vessel or container, whose plural vasa gave French vase and Italian vaso. English vase, vessel and the vascular system of a plant all hold something.
- Origin
- Latin
- Root
- vas
- English cognates
- vase, vessel, vascular
Examples
.
A vase with red flowers stands on the table.
.
The child broke the old vase.
.
She poured water into the vase.
The root is wider than the English word. A is any vessel that holds
something, so a museum's Greek and the anatomical sangovazo, a
blood vessel, are the same root doing two jobs. If it matters that flowers
are involved, say florvazo and the ambiguity disappears.
