is turned inward by --, and it is the neat way to say that something was visible without naming anyone to do the seeing. Esperanto has a full passive with , but that construction is heavier and drags in an agent by implication, so literary prose reaches for instead. It is the standard opening move in descriptions: something appears on the horizon and the sentence starts with the adverb, as in . Compare , an adjective meaning capable of being seen, and , which leans towards turning out to be the case.
