French · Chapter 20 · Lesson 9 · Common mistake

partir, sortir or quitter?

Three ways to leave, and one of them cannot stand alone.

The rule

partir is to leave, full stop, and needs nothing after it. sortir is to go OUT of an enclosed space. quitter MUST have an object: you quitter a place or a person, never quitter on its own. That last rule is the one that catches people.
