Count the objects: ,

.

Where the pronouns go

faire + infinitive as one blockdirect object (le, la, les)What do the colours mean?

la voiture becomes la, in front of faire
TenseFrenchEnglish
present .I'm having it repaired.
present .She keeps us waiting.
.I showed them in.

Not . In a compound tense the pronoun goes in front of the auxiliary, as with any verb.

The one exception is the usual one: after a positive command, the pronoun follows .

  • - ! - Show him in!
  • - ! - Make me laugh!

One object or two: le or lui

direct object (le, la, les)indirect object (lui, leur)What do the colours mean?

Count the objects. When the infinitive has no object of its own, the person is the direct object: , , .

  • . - I make him work.
  • . - I keep them waiting.

When the infinitive has its own object, that object takes the direct slot, and the person becomes indirect: , . With a noun, the person takes .

à Marc becomes lui: the letter already holds the direct slot
ObjectsFrenchEnglish
one .I make him laugh.
two .I get him to read the letter.
two .She gets them to wash the car.

Where would be unclear, the doer can come in with instead: . - I'm having the car repaired by the neighbour.
