The short version
Comparing nouns needs de, comparing verbs does not
Plus, moins and aussi sandwich an adjective, with que after it. Swap the adjective for a noun and the marker takes de, with autant replacing aussi: j'ai plus de livres que toi. Compare a verb and the marker stands alone: je travaille plus que toi. Three structures, one family.
