Ce matin, monsieur Dubois entre dans le bureau. Il a l'air sérieux. "J'ai quelque chose à vous dire," commence-t-il. "Il ne reste qu'une place dans la nouvelle équipe. Une seule." Clara regarde Dubois. Elle attend ce moment depuis des semaines.

This morning, Mr Dubois comes into the office. He looks serious. "I have something to tell you," he begins. "There is only one spot left on the new team. Just one." Clara looks at Dubois. She has been waiting for this moment for weeks.

"Qui veut ce poste ?" demande-t-il. Personne ne parle. Clara ne dit rien, mais elle ne pense qu'à une chose : ce travail est pour elle. À côté d'elle, Marc veut la place aussi.

"Who wants this position?" he asks. Nobody speaks. Clara says nothing, but she thinks of only one thing: this job is for her. Next to her, Marc wants the spot too.

Dubois regarde tout le monde. "Je ne donne ce poste qu'à une personne," dit-il. "Celle qui le veut vraiment." Clara comprend. Il ne reste qu'un moment pour parler. Si elle ne dit rien maintenant, elle perd tout.

Dubois looks at everyone. "I'll give this position to only one person," he says. "The one who really wants it." Clara understands. There is only a moment left to speak. If she says nothing now, she loses everything.

Alors Clara n'attend plus. "Moi, je veux ce poste," dit-elle. "Je ne demande qu'une chose : une chance. Je connais déjà le travail, et je n'ai pas peur." Sa voix est claire. Marc ne dit toujours rien.

So Clara waits no longer. "I want this position," she says. "I'm only asking for one thing: a chance. I already know the job, and I'm not afraid." Her voice is clear. Marc still says nothing.

"Et toi, Marc ?" demande Dubois. Marc pense un moment. "Je veux bien ce poste," dit-il. "Mais Clara le veut plus que moi. Ça se voit." Il ne dit que la vérité.

"And you, Marc?" asks Dubois. Marc thinks for a moment. "I'd like this position," he says. "But Clara wants it more than I do. You can see it." He says only the truth.

"Bon," dit Dubois. "Le poste est pour Clara. Il ne me reste qu'une chose à dire : au travail !" Clara est heureuse. Elle n'a qu'une envie : commencer tout de suite.

"Right," says Dubois. "The position is Clara's. I've only one thing left to say: to work!" Clara is happy. She has only one desire: to start right away.

Le soir, Clara appelle Lucie au téléphone. "Je n'ai eu qu'une chance, et je l'ai prise," dit-elle. "Il ne restait qu'une place, et elle est à moi." Lucie rit. "Tu vois ? Tu n'avais pas besoin d'avoir peur."

In the evening, Clara phones Lucie. "I had only one chance, and I took it," she says. "There was only one spot left, and it's mine." Lucie laughs. "See? You didn't need to be afraid."

Clara pose le téléphone. La nuit est claire. Il ne reste rien de sa peur. Demain, un nouveau travail commence. Cette fois, Clara sait qu'elle n'a plus peur de rien.

Clara puts down the phone. The night is clear. Nothing is left of her fear. Tomorrow, a new job begins. This time, Clara knows she is no longer afraid of anything.
