Le café du quartier

Tous les matins, Hélène entre dans le café du coin. C'est le même café depuis dix ans. La même porte, la même table près de la porte, le même monsieur derrière. Elle dit bonjour, elle prend la même place, elle commande la même chose.

Every morning, Hélène walks into the cafe on the corner. It is the same cafe for ten years. The same door, the same table near the door, the same man behind. She says hello, she takes the same seat, she orders the same thing.

Ce matin, quelque chose n'est pas pareil. La table près de la porte n'est plus la même table. C'est une autre table, plus petite, plus belle. Hélène la regarde un moment. Elle ne dit rien. Elle s'assoit comme d'habitude.

This morning, something is not the same. The table near the door is no longer the same table. It is another table, smaller, prettier. Hélène looks at it for a moment. She says nothing. She sits down as usual.

Mais ce n'est pas le même monsieur qui vient. C'est une jeune femme. Elle a le visage doux et les yeux fatigués. Elle demande à Hélène ce qu'elle veut prendre.

But it is not the same man who comes. It is a young woman. She has a gentle face and tired eyes. She asks Hélène what she wants to have.

"Comme d'habitude," dit Hélène. Puis elle voit que la jeune femme ne comprend pas. "Pardon. Un café, s'il vous plaît. Rien d'autre."

"As usual," says Hélène. Then she sees that the young woman does not understand. "Sorry. A coffee, please. Nothing else."

La jeune femme revient avec le café. Elle reste une minute près de la table. Elle veut parler, mais elle ne sait pas trop quoi dire.

The young woman comes back with the coffee. She stays a minute near the table. She wants to speak, but she does not quite know what to say.

"C'est mon premier jour," dit-elle. "Mon père a acheté le café la semaine dernière. L'autre monsieur a pris sa retraite. Il était fatigué."

"It's my first day," she says. "My father bought the cafe last week. The other man has retired. He was tired."

Hélène pense au vieux monsieur. Il était là depuis toujours. Elle ne sait même pas son nom. Cela lui fait quelque chose.

Hélène thinks about the old man. He had always been there. She does not even know his name. That does something to her.

"Le café est très bon," dit-elle à la jeune femme. "Comme avant. Vous avez gardé le même goût."

"The coffee is very good," she says to the young woman. "Like before. You have kept the same taste."

La jeune femme aime entendre cela. Elle dit merci et va voir une autre personne.

The young woman is happy to hear that. She says thank you and goes to see another person.

Hélène prend son café doucement. La rue passe derrière la porte. Les gens vont au travail. Tout est presque pareil. Presque, mais pas tout à fait. Et Hélène pense qu'un café peut changer sans changer vraiment. C'est l'idée qu'elle aime.

Hélène drinks her coffee slowly. The street goes by behind the door. People are going to work. Everything is almost the same. Almost, but not quite. And Hélène thinks that a cafe can change without really changing. That is the idea she likes.

Elle paye, elle dit au revoir, et elle sort dans le matin froid. Demain, elle va revenir. La nouvelle table sera là. La jeune femme aussi.

She pays, she says goodbye, and she goes out into the cold morning. Tomorrow, she will come back. The new table will be there. The young woman too.
