French keeps the word busy beyond the birdhouse. Un coup de bec is a peck (or a barbed remark); rester le bec dans l'eau - to be left with your beak in the water - is to be left high and dry; and in Belgium and the north a bec is a kiss, which the lark of the song would presumably have preferred.
