Translation
sample, specimen
Word origin
From Old French eschantillon, a diminutive of eschandillon ('standard measure'), traced to a Vulgar Latin scandaculum built on Latin scandere ('to climb, to mount'). The word started as the official measure a trader's goods were checked against, and only later meant a small piece shown as an example.
