/lwe/
Translation
to rent, to hire; to praise
Word origin
Two unrelated Latin verbs fell together in Old French. The everyday sense comes from Latin locare ('to place, to let out for hire'), from locus ('place'); the 'praise' sense comes from Latin laudare ('to praise'), from laus ('praise'). Both arrived at the same French form, which is why one verb now covers renting and praising.
