Par tradition théâtrale, dire merde (to say "good luck" literally "shit") avant une représentation est porte-bonheur - l'équivalent du "break a leg" anglais. En pleine merde (deep in trouble, in a real mess) et dans la merde (in deep trouble) sont des registres familiers pour exprimer une situation difficile.
