Adsum, adesse, adfui is sum with ad- prefixed, and it inherits every irregularity: adest, adsunt, aderam, adero, adfui. Manuscripts assimilate the d freely, so assum, affui and adfui are the same forms with different spelling habits.
Beyond "be present" it takes a dative and means "stand by, back up": adesse amico is to support a friend, and in a Roman court adesse alicui is to appear as his counsel. Of things rather than people it means "be at hand, be imminent" - adest dies, the day has come. Its exact opposite is absum, "be away", and desum, "be missing, fail somebody", is the third member of the family and takes the dative too.
