praesens

Praesens, praesentis is the present participle of praesum, "to be at hand", frozen into an adjective. It declines as a third-declension one-termination word: praesens serves all three genders in the nominative, then praesentis, praesenti, praesentem, and an ablative praesenti when it is a plain adjective or praesente when it is doing participle work in an ablative absolute.

Two senses run beyond "here in the room". Of time it means now, in praesenti or in praesentia, "for the moment". Of help it means prompt and effective, praesens auxilium being aid that arrives rather than aid that is promised. Medieval scribes routinely flatten ae to e, which is why presens and presentibus appear in the corpus alongside the classical spelling.
