Auxilium, auxilii is second declension neuter, from augeo: help is what increases your strength. The number changes the meaning, which is worth learning as a rule rather than meeting by surprise. Singular it is aid in general; plural, auxilia is a technical military term for the auxiliary units, non-citizen troops serving alongside the legions.
Auxilio esse and auxilio venire take the double dative, so auxilio sociis venire is "to come as help to the allies". English auxiliary comes from the adjective auxiliaris, and the grammarians' auxiliary verb is the same idea: a verb brought in to reinforce another.
