Salus, salutis, f., third declension, and effectively singular only. It runs across a range English breaks into several words: bodily health, personal safety, the survival of a state, and then in church Latin the fourth sense that dominates this corpus, salvation. Salvus, "safe and sound", and salve, "hello", belong to the same root.
Two idioms earn their keep. Saluti alicui timere, "to fear for someone's safety", puts the person in the dative and catches people out. And the standard opening of a Roman letter is the name of the sender, the name of the recipient in the dative, and salutem dicit, so often abbreviated to S.D. that the verb disappears entirely. English salute, salutary, salubrious and salvation.
