certe

certe is the adverb of certus, and it pulls in two directions depending on what it is attached to. At full strength it asserts: "certainly, undoubtedly". Restricting a claim, it concedes: "at least, at any rate", narrowing the ground rather than strengthening it. si non omnes, certe multi is the second use in its purest form.

Latin has a second adverb from the same adjective, certo, which survives mainly in the phrase certo scio, "I know for a fact". certe is the default; reach for certo only in that phrase. The underlying verb is cerno, "to sift, to separate out", so what is certus is what has been sorted and settled, and English "certain", "discern" and "decree" all sit in the same family.
