is a contraction of valide, the adverb of validus, "strong", so the sense underneath it is "strongly". Use it with an adjective or adverb ( difficile) or with a verb of feeling ( , ).

Register matters here. belongs to spoken and letter-writing Latin: it is all over Cicero's correspondence and Plautus, and comparatively scarce in his set-piece speeches, which prefer magnopere, or simply a superlative. It is also very common in the Vulgate, where renders "very good" in Genesis, and that ecclesiastical use is part of why it sits this high in our list rather than lower.
