valde

valde is a contraction of valide, the adverb of validus, "strong", so the sense underneath it is "strongly". Use it with an adjective or adverb (valde difficile) or with a verb of feeling (valde gaudeo, valde placet).

Register matters here. valde belongs to spoken and letter-writing Latin: it is all over Cicero's correspondence and Plautus, and comparatively scarce in his set-piece speeches, which prefer magnopere, vehementer or simply a superlative. It is also very common in the Vulgate, where valde bonum renders "very good" in Genesis, and that ecclesiastical use is part of why it sits this high in our list rather than lower.
