converto

Converto, convertere, converti, conversum is third conjugation, cum plus verto. Two forms are ambiguous and worth flagging. Converti is both "I turned" and the present passive infinitive "to be turned". Convertit is present or perfect depending on the length of a vowel that an unmarked text will not show you, so only the surrounding tenses decide it.

Transitively it turns a thing round or into something else, with in and the accusative for the result: in vinum conversa. Reflexively, se convertere ad, it means facing about. The religious sense is a Christian development on the reflexive: to turn oneself towards God, hence conversio, conversus meaning a lay brother, and the whole English family convert, conversion and converse.
