reverto

Reverto, revertere, reverti, reversum is third conjugation, re- plus verto, and it is the awkward one in the family. Classical Latin uses the deponent revertor in the present system (revertor, reverteris, revertitur) but the active reverti and reversus sum in the perfect, so the same verb is deponent at one end and not at the other. Later Latin gives up and treats it as a straightforward active third conjugation verb throughout, which is what the corpus here mostly shows.

Direction is expressed as with any verb of motion: in or ad plus the accusative, or the bare accusative for cities and for domus (domum reverti, "I returned home"). English revert, reverse and reversion all come from it, and note that revert in English has drifted to mean "go back to an earlier state", not "physically come back".
