Diversus, diversa, diversum, first and second declension, and originally the perfect participle of diverto, "turn apart". That literal sense shows through everywhere: in diversas partes is "in opposite directions", people pulled away from each other, and only afterwards does the word settle into the flat English "various".
For "different from" it takes a or ab with the ablative, though classical prose more often says alius atque or alius ac. The medieval corpus spells it diuersa and diuersis with the consonantal u, which is the same letter as v. English diverse, diversity, divert and divorce all sit on this root, and Romance keeps it whole - French divers, Spanish diverso, Italian diverso.
