"etiam" is a rising word: it means "also" or "too", and then "even", pushing past what has already been granted. It is built from "et" and "iam", and the "iam" half still shows in its time sense of "still" or "yet", as in "etiam nunc", even now.
Compare "quoque", which also means "too" but is quieter and stands AFTER the word it applies to, whereas "etiam" stands in front of it. The set phrase "non solum ... sed etiam ..." means "not only ... but also ..." and is worth learning whole, since it is everywhere in Roman prose. As a bare answer to a question, "etiam" means "yes".
