fames

Fames, famis is third declension feminine, and it has one irregularity worth flagging: the ablative singular is fame with a long e, not the fami you would expect from a third declension i-stem. It is also effectively singular only, which makes sense for an abstract state.

Two senses shade into each other, personal hunger and collective famine, and Latin sees no need to separate them. The bare ablative fame is the standard cause construction: fame perire, fame mori, "to die of hunger". Do not confuse it with fama, famae, "report, reputation", which is first declension and a completely different word; a single vowel separates dying of hunger from dying of your reputation. Italian fame and Spanish hambre both descend from it.
