Furor, furoris is third declension masculine, built from furo, "I rave", on the same pattern as amor from amo and timor from timeo. Latin keeps a useful distinction that English blurs: ira is the anger you feel and can nurse for years, furor is the state you are in when the anger has taken the wheel. That is why furor covers both battlefield rage and clinical madness without changing meaning.
Watch the overlap with the verb. Furor is also the first person singular of the deponent furor, furari, "I steal" (whence furtum, "theft"). Context sorts it out, but a bare furor in a sentence can be a nominative noun or a finite verb. English took fury, furious and furore from the noun.
