Timor, timoris, m. Third declension, from timeo, timere, timui. Beside it stands metus, and the classical distinction is worth keeping: metus is the reasoned apprehension of a coming evil, timor the feeling itself, closer to dread.

What is feared goes in the genitive, timor mortis, timor hostium, and that construction is ambiguous in exactly the way English "fear of the enemy" is: it can be the fear they feel or the fear they inspire. The other trap is register. The Vulgate's timor Domini is reverence, not fright, and rendering it as terror wrecks the sense of half the wisdom literature. Gives timid, timorous, intimidate and Spanish temor.
