Gaudium, gaudii is second declension neuter, built on gaudeo, "I rejoice". The plural gaudia is common and usually best kept plural in English, "joys", especially in verse and in hymns. Ecclesiastical Latin leans on the word hard: gaudium magnum is the angel's announcement at the Nativity, and gaudete opens more than one liturgical text.

Set it against laetitia, which is the visible cheerfulness, the grin and the noise. Gaudium in the moralists is the inward and more durable thing, which is why Seneca will happily deny that a drunk man has any. English joy comes from it by way of French joie.
