Hospitium, hospitii, n., second declension, from hospes. The classical sense is a formal relationship, not a spare room: hospitality as a mutual obligation between two families, entered into deliberately, sealed with a token and inherited by the children. Hospitium iungere is to contract it.
The concrete sense grows out of that and takes over. By the monastic corpus the hospitium is a real building with a monk in charge of it and pilgrims in the beds. English hospice, hospital, hostel and hotel all descend from the same word, which is a fair summary of what happened to the institution.
