Ibidem is ibi, "there", plus the emphatic particle -dem, the same suffix that builds idem out of is and tandem out of tam. It means "in that very place", and by an easy extension "at that very moment". Latin has a small set built with that -dem: idem, tandem, quidem, totidem, indidem and this one.
Stress falls on the middle syllable, i-BI-dem, because the i of -bi- is long. The trap for modern readers is the footnote: scholarly ibid. is this word, borrowed wholesale into academic English to mean "in the same source". A Roman would simply have read it as "in the same place" and looked around for the place. Note also that ibidem answers "where", not "to where"; for motion you want eodem.
