late

Late is the adverb of latus, "broad", with comparative latius and superlative latissime. It answers "over how much ground?", not "how far away?", and that is the whole difference from longe: longe lateque, "far and wide", pairs them precisely because they cover different axes.

Its regular partner is pateo, "lie open": late patet is the standard way to say that something extends or stretches, of a forest, a plain, or an empire. Two traps. First, do not confuse it with the identically spelled ablative of latus, lateris, "side", which means "on the side". Second, English late is a false friend from a mile away: Latin has no sense of time here at all, and "lately" is nuper.
