is the adverb of and does two quite different things. Literally it is distance: "far off, a long way", and "far from" is a or with the ABLATIVE, not a bare case.

Figuratively it is the standard intensifier in front of a comparative or a superlative, "by far": melior, maximus. Latin much prefers here to , which belongs with comparatives, and the superlative especially wants . Its opposite is "near" and, awkwardly for learners, also means "almost". gives Italian lungi and French loin.
