maritus

Maritus, mariti is second declension masculine and entirely regular. It is also an adjective, maritus, marita, maritum, "married, wedded, conjugal", which is why you meet marita as "wife" and the phrase ius maritum for marriage law.

Classical prose usually prefers vir for a woman's husband, exactly as English once used "man"; maritus is the more legal and formal word and it becomes the ordinary one in medieval Latin. It is a false friend with English marital, which behaves like the Latin adjective, but not with mariner or maritime: those come from mare, the sea, and are unrelated despite looking close. Spanish marido and Portuguese marido continue the noun; French mari lost the ending.
