Uxor, uxoris, f., third declension. Latin has no single verb for "to marry" that both parties can use: a man uxorem ducit, "leads a wife" home, while a woman nubit with the dative, viro nubit, "veils herself for a husband". Get the direction wrong and the sentence describes the wrong person doing the marrying.

Uxor is the legal and everyday word; mulier is "woman" generally, coniunx is the loftier "spouse" of either sex. It barely survived into the modern languages, which took esposa and épouse from sponsa instead, so English has only the fossil uxorious, "excessively fond of one's wife", and the legal uxoricide.
