Murus, muri, m., second declension: a built wall of stone or brick, and particularly a city wall.
Latin keeps three walls apart and it is worth keeping them apart in translation too. Murus is the structure itself. Moenia, neuter plural and with no singular, is the whole defensive circuit of a city, walls and towers and gates together. Paries is the wall of a room or a house, the thing you hang a picture on. Roman religious law treated the murus of Rome as sacred and inviolable, which is the point of the story in which Remus jumps over the line his brother has marked and is killed for it. English mural and immure come from it, and Spanish muro and French mur run straight on.
