Porta, portae is feminine, first declension, and means a gate in a wall rather than a door in a house: for the door of a room Latin says ostium, ianua or fores. Roman city gates were named and used as landmarks, the Porta Capena, the Porta Collina, and a camp had four of them in fixed positions.

Keep it apart from portus, "harbour", fourth declension and masculine, and from porto, "I carry", first conjugation. English gets porch, portal and porter from porta, but the porter who carries your luggage is from porto, and the two words landed in English looking identical. Italian porta and Spanish puerta both mean door and keep the wider sense.
