Oceanus, oceani, m., second declension, borrowed unchanged from Greek Okeanos.
It is not a general word for a large sea; mare does that. Oceanus is the outer water, the Atlantic beyond the Pillars of Hercules, and by extension the Channel and the North Sea, which is what Caesar means by it. The Mediterranean is mare nostrum and never oceanus. Half the time it is a proper name and gets a capital, because Oceanus is also the Titan, the river running round the rim of the world in Homer and Hesiod, and Roman writers slide between the geography and the god without warning. Every European language took the word.
