orior

Orior, oriri, ortus sum is deponent, so ortus est means "he arose", never "he was raised". Its present tense is a hybrid worth memorising: oritur and oreris follow the third conjugation, while the infinitive oriri and everything else follow the fourth.

The range is wide but consistent - the sun rises, a river has its source, a war breaks out, and a person is "born of" a family, ortus with the ablative. The east is simply the oriens, the present participle used as a noun, which is where Orient and oriental come from; origin, original, aboriginal and abort (ab plus orior, to miscarry) all belong to the same family. There is no perfect active; the future participle is orturus.
